Tattooing Over Moles, Scars and Stretch Marks
Tattoos can be a powerful form of self-expression and even self-healing, with many people choosing to get tattoos over moles, scars, and stretch marks for both aesthetic and non-aesthetic reasons. However, tattooing over these skin conditions comes with unique challenges that you should be aware of as a beginner tattoo artist.
Can You Tattoo Over Moles?

Tattooing directly over moles is generally discouraged for several reasons. For example, tattooing over raised moles can create an uneven surface that affects how ink is deposited, potentially leading to an inconsistent result. It can also prevent your customer from seeing any changes to the shape and colour of the mole if it’s tattooed over.
However, you can work around the mole whilst still creating an amazing tattoo for your customers. Many artists opt to design tattoos that cleverly incorporate moles without covering them which can help balance having an aesthetically pleasing tattoo with medical visibility of the mole.
Can You Tattoo Over Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are a form of scarring that occurs when the skin stretches rapidly due to growth, weight gain, pregnancy, or bodybuilding. They typically appear as streaky lines and have a different texture from the surrounding skin. This difference in skin quality can affect how tattoo ink settles and heals. Because stretch-marked skin is thinner and may be more sensitive, it can be more prone to discomfort and slower healing during the tattooing process.
Whilst it’s not recommended to tattoo over new stretch marks, tattooing over healed stretch marks can be done, it just requires careful technique to ensure even coverage:
- Colour and Shading Considerations: Tattoo ink may absorb unevenly on stretch-marked skin, so shading techniques are often used to create a smoother visual effect.
- Styles That Work Well: Watercolour, abstract, and illustrative styles can help camouflage stretch marks, as they’re more forgiving of slight textural inconsistencies.
Can You Tattoo Over Scars?

Scars vary in type and origin with each requiring different considerations:
- Keloid: Raised, thickened scars that grow beyond the original wound. These are risky to tattoo, as trauma from the tattoo cartridge can trigger further growth.
- Hypertrophic: Raised scars that stay within the wound boundary.
- Atrophic: Indented scars (e.g., acne or chickenpox scars).
- Surgical/Burn Scars: May involve large areas of altered texture and sensitivity.
Tattooing over a scar is usually only advisable once it has fully healed but there are risks to doing so, including ink blowouts, uneven texture caused by the ink settling inconsistently, and pain sensitivity as scarred skin may be more or less sensitive than the surrounding area leading to unpredictable levels of discomfort.
As with stretch marks and moles, you can tattoo over scars, there is just more to consider before doing so to ensure the same high-quality results for customers.
Why Experience with Scar Tissue Matters
As a tattoo artist, understanding how to work with scar tissue is a vital skill—especially if you're aiming to provide inclusive, transformative work for clients with varied skin histories. Scarred skin behaves differently from healthy skin, and your approach must reflect that. Adjusting your technique, whether it’s needle depth, pressure, or ink placement, is essential to ensure safe, effective, and aesthetically pleasing results.
It’s important to gather as much information as possible before you tattoo on scarred skin. You might consider asking your customers the following questions so you can make an informed decision about whether it’s safe to tattoo them:
- How old is the scar or stretch mark?
- How has the area healed from previous injuries or tattoos?
- Are there any ongoing skin sensitivities or conditions?
Healing and Aftercare Guidance for Complex Skin Types
When working with scars, moles, or stretch marks, healing may be slower or more reactive. It’s your responsibility to educate the client on what to expect and how to care for the area:
- Monitor Carefully: Advise clients to keep an eye out for unusual inflammation, signs of infection, or ink spreading (blowouts).
- Tailored Aftercare: Recommend gentle aftercare products, such as Hustle Butter Deluxe.
- Plan for Multiple Sessions: Be transparent that the area may require touch-ups or layering for optimal results due to ink rejection or absorption variability.

When to Decline or Delay Tattooing
One of the most important skills you can develop as a tattoo artist is knowing when not to tattoo:
- Changing Moles: You shouldn’t tattoo directly over a mole that is growing, darkening, or changing shape.
- Fresh or Healing Scars: Tattoo only after the scar has fully healed. The skin should be flat, pale, and stable.
- Active Skin Conditions: Postpone tattooing over eczema, psoriasis, acne, or rashes until the skin has cleared and stabilised.
Remember, your customer’s long-term health and satisfaction should guide your decisions.
Tattooing over moles, scars, and stretch marks is more than just technical, it's about understanding the unique stories and sensitivities behind each client's skin. As a new artist, taking the time to learn, ask questions, and develop your technique to suit your customer’s unique skin will set you apart.
